El Instituto de Producción y Sanidad Vegetal (IPSV) orienta su acción a la formación de pregrado en la Carrera de Agronomía e Ingeniería en Alimentos y a la de postgraduados principalmente en el Magíster en Ciencias Vegetales y Doctorado en Ciencias Agrarias. La investigación constituye un componente muy relevante en el proceso de formación de capital humano.
Para el desarrollo de las actividades de pregrado-postgrado, investigación y vinculación con el medio, el IPSV cuenta con diversos laboratorios, además de desarrollar experimentos de campo en la Estación Experimental Agropecuaria Austral y el Centro de Innovación Colaborativo (CIC) de Máfil.
Ser una unidad académica líder en el ámbito de la producción y sanidad vegetal a través de la formación de recursos humanos, actividad científica y divulgación del conocimiento, con énfasis en sistemas agrícolas sustentables de clima templado.
Aportar a la formación de profesionales y graduados de excelencia, además de generar y transferir conocimiento científico-tecnológico en el área de la producción y sanidad vegetal bajo un contexto de agricultura sustentable, que responda a los desafíos del sector agrícola a través de una permanente vinculación con el medio nacional e internacional.

Anita Behn Ing. Agr., Dr. Cs. Agr.
Es Ingeniero Agrónomo de la Universidad Católica de Chile, realizó su Doctorado en Ciencias Agrarias en la Universidad Tecnológica de Munich (TUM), Alemania, y sus estudios de Post Doctorado en el Bavarian State Research Centre for Agriculture, Alemania.
Sus áreas de investigación son el mejoramiento genético de cultivos y su respuesta a estreses bióticos y abióticos, así como la conservación de recursos genéticos y el rol de la diversidad genética en la sustentabilidad de la agricultura. Es la Curadora del Banco de Germoplasma de Papas de la UACh. En 2014 inició el área de cervecería artesanal y sus materias primas en la UACh, enfocándose principalmente en el lúpulo.
Carolina Contreras D.Ing. Agro., M. Sc., PhD.
Es Ingeniera Agrónoma de la Universidad de Chile. Posteriormente realizó un Magíster en Ciencias Vegetales en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile y luego se especializó en Fisiología de postcosecha, obteniendo el grado de PhD., en Michigan State University, EE.UU.
Su área de investigación tiene como objetivo estudiar la fisiología de postcosecha frutal, principalmente, a calidad de fruta, desórdenes fisiológicos y biología del aroma.
Carolina Lizana C Ing. Agr., M. Sc., Dr. Cs. Agr.
Es Ingeniero Agrónomo, con mención en Fitotecnia, de la Universidad de Chile, donde posteriormente realizó un Magister en Ciencias Agropecuarias, con mención en producción de Cultivos. Realizó sus estudios de Doctorado en la Universidad Austral de Chile-.
Sus áreas de investigación son la producción de cultivos y su respuesta a estreses ambientales, en el contexto del cambio climático global, así como el rol de la diversidad genética en la sustentabilidad de la agricultura.
Daniel Calderini R. Ing. Agr., Dr. Cs. Agr.
Su área de investigación es la interfase entre la fisiología y la biología molecular en relación con la generación del rendimiento, el peso de grano y la interacción con el número de granos. Ha trabajado en la respuesta a la temperatura y otros estreses abióticos.
Enrique Ferrada Q. Ing. Agr., Dr. Cs. Agr.
Es Ingeniero Agrónomo de la Universidad de La Frontera y Doctor en Ciencias de la Agricultura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Su área de investigación es la Sanidad Vegetal, específicamente en aspectos asociados a la fitopatología como son la etiología, epidemiología y control de enfermedades en especies frutales, cultivos y hortalizas presentes en la zona sur.
Erika Briceño P. Ing. Agr., Dr. Cs. Agr.
Es Ingeniera Agrónoma de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso y Doctora en Ciencias de la Agricultura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Su área de investigación es el estudio y control de enfermedades en cultivos agrícolas, trabajando principalmente con tomate en invernadero, frutales subtropicales, vides, arándanos, papa, maqui y lúpulo. Parte importante de estas investigaciones son la identificación y caracterización de patógenos, su interacción con las condiciones medioambientales y con sus hospederos. En las estrategias de control, ha evaluado nuevas moléculas de productos químicos, té de compost y productos de control biológico.
Una área desarrollada en los últimos años es el estudio y producción de hongos comestibles.

Es Ingeniero Agrónomo, Magister en Hortofruticultura y Doctor de la Universidad de Talca. Realizó un post-Doctorado en Oregon State University (OSU), EE.UU., en colaboración con el USDA-YARL, Wapato, Washington.
Sus áreas de investigación son el uso de semio-químicos (incluyendo el mejoramiento de sistemas de monitoreo, el desarrollo de nuevos atractantes y trampas, además del mejoramiento y desarrollo de estrategias de confusión sexual), el mejoramiento del uso de pesticidas y controladores biológicos; todo lo anterior en el marco del Manejo Integrado de Plagas.
Iván Maureira B. Ing. Agr., Ph. D.,
Es Ingeniero Agrónomo de la Universidad Austral de Chile. Es Ph. D., Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics. University of Wisconsin-Madison. Realizó estudios Postdoctorales Research Associate en la Cornell University, Dept. of Plant Biology.
Sus áreas de investigación se relacionan a responder preguntas en mejoramiento genético, y genética cuantitativa y poblacional de cultivos y forrajes. Estudio de genomas y genes de especies vegetales domesticadas para comprender sus historias de domesticación y adaptación a las condiciones productivas del sur de Chile. Identificación de genes asociados a caracteres de calidad nutricional en diversos cultivos. Análisis genético de caracteres del desarrollo de especies cultivadas.
Mauricio González Chang Ing. Agr., M. Sc, PhD
Es Ingeniero Agrónomo y su grado de Magíster en Ciencias del Suelo en la Universidad Austral de Chile. Posteriormente, efectuó un PhD en Ecología en Lincoln University en Nueva Zelanda.
Sus áreas de investigación son las siguientes: Control biológico conservativo e interacciones tróficas en agroecosistemas; Agroecología y funciones ecológicas y Adaptación y adopción de prácticas agroecológicas por agricultoras y agricultores.
Patricio Sandaña G. Ing Agro., Dr. Agr.
Es Ingeniero Agrónomo y Doctor en Ciencias Agrarias de la Universidad Austral de Chile
Investigador en el área de eco-fisiología de cultivos con experiencia en cultivos de grano (cereales y leguminosas), en el cultivo de papa y praderas en aspectos relacionados con la investigación de relaciones fuente-destino, captura y eficiencia de uso de nutrientes y la utilización de modelos de simulación de cultivo.
Daniela Bustos-Korts Ing. Agro., M. Sc., PhD.
Ingeniera agrónoma de la Universidad Austral de Chile, realizó su Magíster en Ciencias Vegetales, mención Fisiología Vegetal en la misma casa de estudios. Obtuvo su grado de Doctor en la Universidad de Wageningen, Países Bajos, donde se desempeñó posteriormente como docente e investigadora.
Actualmente es académica en el área ‘Producción de Cultivos, Agricultura Predictiva y Big data’. Su área de investigación es la aplicación de modelos estadísticos y de cultivo para predecir la adaptación de cultivos, con un foco en tolerancia al estrés hídrico y cambio climático. Imparte asignaturas de pre- y postgrado en áreas de estadística aplicada a situaciones de interés agroalimentario y mejoramiento vegetal.

Las líneas de investigación del IPSV consideran el diseño y manejo de sistemas agrícolas sustentables, genética de caracteres productivos y nutricionales, fisiología de especies cultivadas, postcosecha, y adaptación al cambio climático, y modelamiento de sistemas agrícolas. Son foco de su atención la agroecología, la polinización y manejo sanitario de abejas, y relaciones insecto –planta y depredadores-plaga.
Además, el IPSV investiga sobre la fisiología y postcosecha de frutales, semillas y especies silvestres. Lo anterior, utilizando herramientas de biología molecular, técnicas de propagación in vitro, estadísticas y modelamiento, de manera de generar soluciones integradas a las problemáticas asociadas a una agricultura productiva y sustentable.
